The Moon Cow

In the painting "The Moon Cow" I depicted the life of a Ukrainian woman in harmony with the family's provider (the cow), which in those days was in fact part of every household. The cow is a symbol of the Earth's productive forces, of motherhood and well-being. In ancient times our ancestors believed that this animal embodied the night sky, for its horns recalled the young Moon and its milk the Milky Way. The young woman is dressed in a Borshchiv wedding costume (Ternopil region). The Borshchiv shirt is a unique phenomenon of our culture, marked by its black color. Some say it is a tribute to the earth; others, that this was how women "poured out" their longing for their men. I paid great attention to the enchanting headdress, laid out from gerdans and flowers.
