The Soul of the Polonyna

"The Soul of the Polonyna" is a young Hutsul woman with a lamb in her arms, a symbol of simplicity and innocence. The sheep has been humankind's companion for many centuries. Sheep herding is the ideal model of the Hutsul world. Since ancient times, the Hutsuls "dressed in sheep, covered themselves with sheep, and fed on sheep." The woman wears traditional Hutsul outerwear — a keptar of sheepskin. Her neck is adorned with a gerdan, beads, and a necklace of two rows of coins; the local name for this adornment is "taliary."
