The Jackdaw

"The Jackdaw" — I named this painting after the symbolic bird of Halychyna. Here I depicted the so-called "bavnytsia" — the headdress of Galician women. The bavnytsia spoke of social status. Well-to-do ladies dressed in a richly decorated bavnytsia together with an expensive kerchief. Also common were bodices with gussets at the waist, also called "laptsi." The woman carries a yoke with water on her shoulder. She breaks free from the wooden buckets, cleansing everything around her and filling it with life.
