The Jug

In the painting "The Jug," a woman is depicted in the wedding attire of Pokuttia (Ivano-Frankivsk region). According to ancient beliefs, an abundance of neck adornments was meant to protect the bride from the evil eye and ensure her a happy married life. I complemented the image in the painting with a goat, which in traditional culture embodied fertility and the life-giving force of nature. In her hands the woman holds a clay jug of milk that winds and streams high upward. This household vessel has always drawn me with its rounded form, which gave both our ancestors and us a sense of comfort and abundance.
