The Cycle

The name of the painting "The Cycle" came from the symbol depicted on the pysanka — the sign of fire, the Sun, and movement: the svarha. The reversed (left-facing) svarha symbolizes the setting Sun, the cool feminine energy. The pysanka as a phenomenon has been known to humankind since the times of the Trypillian culture. The pysanka is an echo of the pagan sun, of spring, of nature's rebirth. Our ancestors believed that a wondrous magical power was concentrated in the pysanka, endowed with a special mission — to carry goodness, happiness, love, and abundance. Against the background of the woman with the pysanka I depicted a bird, for it was the bird that, according to legend, brought pysanky to people. Our forefathers believed that migratory birds know more than we do, that they know the mystery of life and the place where warmth and life are born; they know where to fly and when to return, for within them they carry an egg — a symbol of the Sun, of birth, and of resurrection. The woman is dressed in the festive attire of the Poltava region. A distinctive feature of Poltava embroidery is the combination of floral and geometric ornaments and the use of threads in pastel shades.
