The Spinner
"The Spinner" — in this painting I depicted a woman sitting at a spinning wheel, spinning the thread of life, which grows and turns into a whirlwind, stretching far out into the cosmos. The spinning wheel is known among the people as a symbol of life and time; it was ascribed great protective and healing significance. The wheel in general is a very ancient symbol, an image of the eternal cycle. The attire is from Polissia (Volyn region). What captivated me most was the variation on the way the namitka is tied — I really liked its shape, so I began with this part and built the style of the image out from there.
